The Elevator's Secret

“The Mysterious Elevator Button”
It was late at night when Jake stepped into his apartment building’s elevator. He lived on the 12th floor, but tonight, something strange caught his eye.
There was a new button. “13.”
His building didn’t have a 13th floor—at least, that’s what he always thought. Curious, he pressed it. The elevator hummed, the doors closed, and instead of the usual smooth ride up… the lights flickered. The air grew colder. The numbers on the screen didn’t change. The elevator kept rising, but no floor appeared.
Ding! The doors slid open.
Jake stepped out into a dimly lit hallway that stretched into darkness. The walls were lined with portraits… of him. Every single one captured a different moment of his life—some he didn’t even remember. At the end of the hallway, a mirror stood. But his reflection wasn’t his own.
It smiled.
And whispered: “We’ve been waiting for you.”
The elevator doors slammed shut behind him. The button panel inside no longer had numbers—just one word.
“Stay.”
Jake’s heart pounded. He spun around, trying to open the elevator doors, but they wouldn’t budge. The mirror in front of him rippled, as if it were made of liquid. His reflection stepped forward—out of the glass.
It looked exactly like him… but something was off. Its eyes were darker, its grin too wide.
“You don’t belong here,” the reflection said, tilting its head. “But I do.”
Before Jake could react, the doppelgänger lunged at him. He stumbled backward, crashing into one of the portraits. The moment his back touched the canvas, the walls began to move. The hallway twisted, stretching, closing in around him.
The reflection stepped closer, reaching out. Jake felt an invisible force pulling him toward the mirror. His body wasn’t his anymore—his limbs felt numb, his vision blurred.
The last thing he saw before darkness swallowed him was his reflection stepping into the elevator, pressing a new button.
“12.”
The doors closed. The elevator descended.
Jake was gone.
But in Apartment 1207… someone else had just moved in.
