It was 2:17 in the morning when Jakeâs phone buzzed. He picked it up, half asleep⊠and froze. A message from his mum. âDonât go downstairs.â Jake frowned. That didnât make sense. She was asleep just across the hall. He typed back, âWhat do you mean?â For a moment, there was no reply. Then his phone buzzed again. âI heard it too.â Now he was fully awake. The house was completely silent. Too silent. Jake slowly sat up, his eyes fixed on the dark hallway outside his room. Another message came through. âJake⊠stay in your room.â His chest tightened. âMum?â he whispered, stepping out of bed anyway. The floor creaked as he opened his door. The hallway light flickered. Thenâ A loud thud echoed from downstairs. Jake froze. His phone vibrated again. âI said DONâT MOVE.â His hands started shaking as he typed, âThen whoâs downstairs?â The typing dots appeared⊠then disappeared. Seconds felt like hours. Finally, a message came through. âItâs not me.â Jakeâs breath caught in his throat. And thenâ From downstairs⊠he heard his mumâs voice. âJake? Is that you?â Relief rushed over him. âMum?â he called back. His phone buzzed one last time. Slowly, he looked down at the screen. A new message. But this time⊠it wasnât from his mum. It was from his own number. âIâm already downstairs.â And right thenâ he heard footsteps⊠running up the stairs.
