In the days after the great prophet Elijah was taken up to heaven, his successor, Elisha, began his journey to continue God’s work. One day, Elisha was traveling to the town of Bethel. As he walked along the road, a group of young boys came out from the town. They saw him and began to mock him. “Go up, you baldhead!” they shouted. “Go up, you baldhead!” Their words were not just childish teasing—they were full of disrespect, not only toward Elisha but toward the calling God had placed on him. Elisha stopped. He turned around and looked at them. Then, in a moment that showed the seriousness of dishonoring God’s servant, he called down a curse in the name of the Lord. Suddenly, from the nearby woods, two bears emerged. The laughter turned into screams. The bears charged toward the group and mauled forty-two of the boys. The once playful crowd scattered in terror, the mocking voices silenced. Afterward, Elisha continued on his journey, eventually reaching Mount Carmel, and then returning to Samaria. This story is often remembered as a powerful reminder: respect matters—not just toward people, but toward the roles and responsibilities given by God.
