Imagine a country that closed itself off from the entire world⊠for more than 200 years.â âIn the 1600s, Japanâs ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu began a policy called Sakoku, which means âclosed country.â Foreigners were banned from entering Japan⊠and Japanese people were not allowed to leave. If someone left the country and tried to return, they could even face death. The goal was to stop foreign influence and protect Japanâs culture and power.â âThis isolation lasted until 1853, when American commander Matthew C. Perry arrived with warships and forced Japan to open its borders.â âAnd just like that⊠Japanâs 200 years of isolation came to an end.â
