Gjergj Kastrioti - Skanderbeg Gjergj Kastrioti was the son of a noble family from Shaip. At the age of nine he was taken by the Ottoman Empire and sent to the court of the Sultan, where he was educated and trained as a warrior. Over the years he became a skilled commander and took the pseudonym Skanderbeg. But in 1443, during the Battle of Niš, he turned against the Ottoman Empire and returned to his homeland. Gjergj Kastrioti took Kruja and in 1444 united the Shaip princes in the League of Lezha to defend Arbërina. For many years he fought against the Ottomans and became one of the greatest commanders in Albanian history.
