In villages near the mountains of northern Korea, people used to tell stories about the Dalgyal Gwisin — the “Egg Ghost.” It’s one of the oldest Korean urban legends, known on both sides of Korea, including North Korea. The story goes like this: A soldier was walking home late at night through a snowy mountain road during a blackout. He saw a woman standing beside a tree, crying softly. When he asked if she was hurt, she didn’t answer. Slowly, she turned her head toward him. Her face had no eyes. No nose. No mouth. Just smooth white skin — like an egg. The soldier ran into the forest, hearing footsteps behind him the entire time. By morning, villagers found him frozen in the snow. His face was twisted in terror. And beside his body were footprints that suddenly stopped — as if whatever followed him simply vanished into the dark.
