In 1953, the US government funded a secret program called "Project Sunshine" But it had absolutely nothing to do with the sun. It was about stealing dead babies. During the Cold War, heavy nuclear testing filled the atmosphere with a deadly radioactive isotope: Strontium-90. The military needed to know how much radiation the human body was absorbing. And Strontium-90 accumulates directly inside human bones. But they needed young, developing tissue to measure the peak danger. So, the AEC and the CIA built a global, covert network. In a classified 1955 meeting, scientist Willard Libby stated, and I quote: "If anybody knows how to do a good job of body snatching, they will really serve their country."For years, doctors secretly harvested limbs and bone samples from deceased infants during autopsies—without ever telling the grieving parents.
