Jake was home alone one stormy night while his parents were out shopping. Rain pounded against the windows, and thunder shook the house. Around midnight, he was lying in bed watching videos when he suddenly heard three slow knocks on his bedroom window. His heart skipped a beat because his room was on the second floor, with no balcony or tree nearby. Nervously, he walked over and pulled back the curtain, but there was nothing outside except darkness and rain. Trying to calm himself down, he turned away, but then his phone buzzed. It was a text from his mom asking if he was okay. Confused, Jake replied that he was fine. A moment later, another message appeared: “Don’t look outside.” His stomach tightened. Before he could respond, a third text arrived: “We just got home and saw someone climbing down from your bedroom window.” Jake’s hands began to shake as fear rushed through him. His mom quickly sent another message telling him to lock his bedroom door because they were calling the police. Jake sprinted across the room and locked it just as he heard slow, heavy footsteps coming from the hallway. The footsteps moved closer and closer until they stopped right outside his door. Then his phone buzzed one last time. It was a message from his mom that read, “Jake… if you’re reading this, don’t turn around.” As he stared at the screen, frozen with fear, the doorknob slowly began to turn.
