Did you know that on the morning of 9 February 1855, the entire county of Devon woke up to find that something had walked across it in the night. In the fresh snow, in a single perfect line, were over a hundred miles of cloven hoofprints. They began in the south and stretched as far as the Exe estuary. The prints were perfectly spaced. Small. Cloven. Identical. When they reached a wall, they continued on the other side. When they reached a haystack, they crossed the top. When they reached a locked garden, they passed through the bolted gate. When they reached a row of houses, they went over the rooftops and down the lane on the far side. They climbed up drainpipes too narrow for any animal. They crossed the River Exe, a two-mile span of open water, and continued unchanged on the other shore. Whatever made them did so in a single night. Hundreds of witnesses came forward. The Times of London reported it. The Royal Society investigated. No animal, no weather, no person, and no theory has ever fit. The case is still open in Devon today. And no one has ever explained what walked across the snow that night.
