The Haunting of Route 22: Don't Look Down!

STEP 2 — SCRIPT: The Screaming Bridge of Route 22 If you ever cross Route 22 at exactly midnight, roll your windows up first. Whatever you hear, don't roll them down to check. Locals call it the Screaming Bridge. Built in the 1970s, replacing an older bridge that collapsed decades before, right into the river below. The rule's been passed down since. Cross before midnight or after. Never during. Never with your windows down. Marcus didn't know any of that. Twenty-four, driving home from a late shift, GPS routing him straight through Route 22 at 11:58pm. His coworker had mentioned it once, half-joking. "Don't linger on that bridge at midnight. Just drive through." Marcus laughed it off at the time. His window was cracked for the cold air. He forgot to roll it up. He hit the bridge right as his dashboard clock flipped to 12:00. Then he heard it. A scream. Long, drawn out, coming from below the bridge, not beside it. Not behind it. Underneath, like it was rising up through the water itself. He looked down through his window at the river. The water was completely still. No wind. No current moving. The scream cut off exactly four seconds later. Precisely the length locals say it took the original bridge to fall. He gunned it across, windows up, hands shaking on the wheel. He never drives that stretch after 11pm anymore. Says he still hears it sometimes, right at midnight, even parked in his own driveway miles away.
