Cape Verde. The Tiny Nation That Helped Break an Empire Portugal ruled these islands for nearly 500 years. But in the shadows, a revolution was coming. In 1956, AmĂlcar Cabral and other freedom fighters created the PAIGC, a movement built to destroy Portuguese colonial rule in Guinea and Cape Verde. Then came the war. In 1963, fighters launched an armed struggle in Portuguese Guinea. They faced trained soldiers, aircraft, prisons, and executions, but they kept moving through forests, villages, and secret bases. Cabral became the mind behind the resistance. Portugal saw him as a dangerous enemy. On January 20, 1973, assassins killed Cabral in Conakry. They thought the revolution would die with him. They were wrong. In April 1974, Portugal’s dictatorship collapsed during the Carnation Revolution. Then, on July 5, 1975, crowds filled Praia as Cape Verde declared independence. Aristides Pereira became the nation’s first president. Cabral never saw the flag rise, but his sacrifice helped turn a tiny island nation into a symbol of freedom.
