He won the election. The military stole the victory. Then, just as freedom moved closer, he collapsed and died. June 12. 1993. Millions of Nigerians voted in one of the country’s most peaceful elections. MKO Abiola was ahead of Bashir Tofa and appeared ready to become president. But before the final result could be announced, General Ibrahim Babangida cancelled the election. Nigeria erupted. Protesters flooded the streets. Soldiers moved in. The country stood on the edge of chaos. But Abiola refused to disappear. On June 11, 1994, he declared himself Nigeria’s lawful president. Days later, General Sani Abacha’s government arrested him for treason. For four years, Abiola remained behind bars. His supporters kept fighting. His wife, Kudirat Abiola, was assassinated in Lagos in 1996. Then came July 7, 1998. During a meeting with American officials, the 60-year-old Abiola suddenly became ill and died.
