Sixty miles off the coast of Belize, there's a giant hole in the ocean where sunlight disappears and life becomes incredibly scarce. Known as the Great Blue Hole, it stretches more than 300 meters across and plunges 125 meters into the Earth. As divers descend deeper, they reach a thick layer of toxic hydrogen sulfide where oxygen nearly disappears. Below it, the water becomes eerily silent and very little life can survive. Scientists also discovered enormous stalactites deep inside the hole, proving it was once a massive cave before rising seas flooded it thousands of years ago.
