Just outside Rome, there's a sinkhole so deep that no human has ever reached its deepest known passages. It's called Pozzo del Merro. From the surface, it looks like an ordinary pond surrounded by trees. But beneath the water, the shaft drops at least 392 metersâdeeper than the Empire State Building is tall. Scientists have used robotic equipment to explore its depths, but much of the flooded shaft remains unexplored because of the extreme depth and dangerous conditions.Even today, no one knows exactly how far it continues below.
