The sky isn't actually blue... so why does it look that way? Sunlight may look white, but it's actually made of all the colors of the visible spectrum. As sunlight enters Earth's atmosphere, tiny nitrogen and oxygen molecules scatter shorter wavelengths of light much more efficiently than longer wavelengths. This process is called Rayleigh scattering. Blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light, so it's scattered across the sky in every direction, making the sky appear blue wherever you look. At sunrise and sunset, sunlight passes through much more atmosphere, scattering most of the blue light away and allowing reds and oranges to dominate. The sky isn't blue because the air is blue—it's blue because Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light more efficiently than the other colors.
