Between 1968 and 1985, a killer stalked the hills outside Florence, Italy. He targeted couples parked in remote areas at night. Sixteen victims. Always couples. Always the same method. But that's not the strangest part. He surgically removed organs from some of his female victims and mailed pieces to investigators. Police investigated for decades. One man was convicted — then acquitted on appeal. Two alleged accomplices were later sentenced to life in prison. Then they were released. A famous American author — writing a book about the case — was accused by Italian prosecutors of being involved himself. The charges were eventually dropped. Despite one of the longest investigations in Italian history, no one has ever been definitively proven to be the Monster of Florence. The surgical precision of the mutilations suggested medical training. To this day nobody knows who he really was. Or if he ever faced justice at all.
