In Thailand, they say if you count the streetlights on your way home and one of them isn’t there on the way back… someone followed you. There was a girl named Mai who never let anyone forget where they stood below her. She picked apart what people wore, laughed at the boy who stuttered, and told a new girl at school that she’d never have real friends here. One night walking home, Mai counted the streetlights like she always did. Seven, eight, nine. She reached her street and looked back to check — and there were only eight. One was missing. Not broken, not dark. Gone, like it had never been built. She told herself she miscounted. But she started noticing the same thing every night after. A streetlight missing. Always one fewer than before. Until one night, she counted zero. The whole street was dark, and she was standing in the middle of it alone. Her parents filed a report the next morning. No footage, no signs of struggle. Just her phone, left on the sidewalk, still counting a note in her own voice: “Seven, eight, nine…” Months later, the new girl at school walks the same route home every night. She counts the streetlights too. And every time she reaches her street, there’s one more than there was before. When her friends ask why she keeps counting, she just smiles and says: “Someone has to keep track of her.”
