In parts of Mexico, they say if you hear your name called three times at night and answer on the third… you belong to whoever’s calling. There was a boy named Diego who made a game out of scaring the younger kids at school. He’d corner them at recess, whisper things about the dark, then laugh when they cried. One boy, smaller than the rest, he targeted the most — followed him home some days just to watch him flinch at shadows. One night Diego heard his own name from outside his window. Soft, familiar, like his mother’s voice. He ignored it. It came again, a little closer. He told himself it was nothing. The third time, without thinking, he answered. The house went quiet in a way houses aren’t supposed to go quiet. He checked his mother’s room — she was asleep, had been asleep the whole time. He checked the window. Nothing. But his reflection in the glass was smiling before he was. The next few nights, he heard it less like a voice from outside and more like it was already in the room with him. Closer to the bed each time. On the fourth night, his mother woke to an empty bed and a window left open, curtain drifting like something had just climbed through. Now, the boy Diego used to torment sleeps just fine. He says he still hears a voice outside his window sometimes. But he never answers. He just whispers back: “Not it. Try three doors down.”
