She carried it everywhere, dressed it in tiny clothes, and refused to sleep without it. But less than a year later, Okiku suddenly became ill and died. Her grieving family placed the doll on their household altar to remember her. Every day, they prayed beside it. Then they noticed something strange. The doll's hair had started growing. When it was first purchased, the doll had a short bob haircut. Months later, the hair had grown past its shoulders. The family trimmed it. But according to them... the hair grew back. Eventually, the family donated the doll to Mannenji Temple, where it remains today. The temple's caretakers have continued trimming the doll's hair for decades, saying it keeps growing. Some visitors believe the spirit of young Okiku still lives inside it. Others think there's a perfectly ordinary explanation.
