PART 3, Gaspar Yanga. THE TOWN BUILT BY FIRE. The Spanish army came for Gaspar Yanga. But they did not leave with the victory they expected. After years of resistance in the mountains of Veracruz, Spain faced a truth it could not ignore. Yanga’s people would not surrender. They had survived slavery, escaped death, built a hidden community, and defended it against colonial power. So the empire was forced to talk. Yanga and his people demanded what every human being deserves. Freedom. The right to live on their own land. The right to govern themselves. The right to never be dragged back into chains. By the early 1600s, their settlement became known as San Lorenzo de los Negros, remembered as one of the earliest free Black towns in the Americas. Think about that.
