On April 17, 2018, Jennifer Riordan, a 43-year-old bank executive from Albuquerque, New Mexico, was flying home to her husband, Michael, and their two children on Southwest Flight 1380. Then, at 32,000 feet, disaster struck. A fan blade inside the plane's left engine fractured from metal fatigue, sending engine debris crashing into the fuselage and shattering the window beside her seat. The explosive decompression was so violent that Jennifer was partially pulled out of the aircraft. Fellow passengers and flight attendants fought desperately to pull her back inside while a retired nurse performed CPR. Despite their efforts, Jennifer later died from devastating blunt-force injuries to her head, neck, and torso. Thanks to the calm actions of Captain Tammie Jo Shults, the damaged Boeing 737 landed safely in Philadelphia, saving the other 148 people on board.
