Sitting peacefully under the open sky in Kamakura, Japan, stands a massive bronze giant that has survived centuries of catastrophic blazes, brutal earthquakes, and devastating tsunamis. This is the Great Buddha of Kotoku-in, one of Japan’s most iconic and indestructible sacred treasures. Cast in the thirteenth century, this colossal bronze statue of Amida Buddha stands over eleven meters tall and weighs a staggering one hundred twenty-one tons. But what makes this monument truly extraordinary isn't just its immense size, it’s how it came to sit outdoors in the middle of nature. Originally, the Great Buddha was housed inside a grand wooden temple hall built to protect it from the elements. However, in the late fifteenth century, a massive tsunami struck the coast of Kamakura, smashing through the sanctuary and completely washing the building away. While the temple was destroyed, the heavy bronze Buddha stood completely unfazed, holding its ground against the rushing wall of water. Rather than rebuilding the hall, worshippers chose to leave the statue open to the elements, where it has sat exposed to wind, rain, and sun for over five hundred years.
