A microscopic parasite is sickening thousands of people across America. It is called Cyclospora. You cannot see it. You cannot smell it. And it can contaminate fresh produce before the food ever reaches your plate. Michigan has now reported the first two deaths associated with the current outbreak. Health officials say both people had serious underlying medical conditions that may have been worsened by the infection and severe dehydration. Cyclospora usually spreads when someone consumes contaminated food or water. Symptoms can include intense watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, appetite loss, and weight loss. And here is what makes it difficult to recognize: Symptoms can last for weeks—or disappear and suddenly return. Investigators have connected one outbreak cluster to iceberg lettuce served at certain restaurants, but officials are still investigating other cases and possible sources. Washing produce is important. But health officials warn that washing may not completely remove Cyclospora once food has been contaminated. So when should you get help? If severe diarrhea continues, you cannot keep fluids down, or you show signs of dehydration, contact a healthcare provider. Because the most dangerous thing hiding in your refrigerator may be something too small to see.
