In the summer of 2022, Marcus worked the midnight shift driving for a rideshare service along a dark, isolated stretch of rural highway. To protect himself, he installed a high-end dual-lens dashcam that recorded both the road ahead and the interior of his sedan. On the night of August 4th, Marcus picked up zero passengers, driving empty backroads for three hours straight before returning to his suburban home. When Marcus got home, he noticed his car's rear hatch was unlatched and his trunk floorboard was soaked with mud and blood. Suspicious, he removed the dashcam's memory card and plugged it into his laptop. The cabin video showed Marcus driving silently down the dark road. But at 2:15 AM, the video captured a horrifying sight. Two pale, bloody hands slowly emerged from the dark crack between the rear seats and the trunk floorboard. A thin, gaunt man slid his head out from the trunk, standing crouched directly behind Marcus's headrest for over forty minutes while Marcus drove, oblivious with his headphones on. The man stared at the back of Marcus's neck, holding a rusted pair of shears, occasionally stroking his collar, before pulling himself back into the trunk just as Marcus pulled into his driveway. Marcus sprinted out of his house and called 911. SWAT officers surrounded his car in the driveway and dragged the intruder out of the trunk at gunpoint. The suspect was an escaped convict who had broken into Marcus's vehicle while it was parked at a gas station earlier that night. He had been hiding in the trunk, waiting for the right moment to carjack Marcus, but lost his nerve when Marcus drove into a well-lit neighborhood.
