A poor woodcutter lived near a forest. One day, while cutting a tree near a river, his axe slipped from his hand and fell into the water. He sat sadly because the axe was his only tool. A spirit appeared and asked, “Is this your axe?” showing him a golden axe. The woodcutter replied, “No, that is not mine.” The spirit showed him a silver axe. Again, he said, “No, mine is only a simple iron axe.” The spirit smiled and returned his old axe. Because of his honesty, the spirit rewarded him with all three axes.
