This was Basil the Second, the fearsome "Bulgar-Slayer" of the Byzantine Empire. He earned a terrifying moniker that struck fear across the medieval world, a ruthless warrior emperor who transformed a crumbling empire into an unstoppable superpower. Ascending the throne in the tenth century as a young man, Basil faced near-constant civil wars, aristocratic betrayals, and massive rebellions. Rather than breaking, he transformed into an uncompromising military fanatic. He rejected luxurious court life, wore armour under his imperial robes, and lived alongside his soldiers in the mud of the battlefield. Basil forged the legendary Varangian Guard, an elite unit of fierce Norse warriors loyal only to him, and set his sights on his empire’s ultimate rival: the Bulgarian Empire. For decades, he waged a relentless war of attrition. His brutal campaign peaked at the Battle of Kleidion in 1014. After annihilating the enemy army, Basil captured fifteen thousand Bulgarian soldiers. In a horrifying act of psychological warfare, he ordered ninety-nine out of every hundred men blinded, leaving one man with a single eye to guide each hundred back home. When the Bulgarian Tsar saw his ruined army return, he reportedly died of shock. By his death, Basil had expanded Byzantine borders to their greatest extent in centuries, leaving behind a legacy of absolute iron-willed rule. Thanks for watching!
