For decades, he waged a relentless war of attrition. His brutal campaign peaked at the Battle of Kleidion in 1014. After annihilating the enemy army, Basil captured fifteen thousand Bulgarian soldiers. In a horrifying act of psychological warfare, he ordered ninety-nine out of every hundred men blinded, leaving one man with a single eye to guide each hundred back home. When the Bulgarian Tsar saw his ruined army return, he reportedly died of shock.
