Do you know that turbulence may feel frightening—but it usually isn’t dangerous? Turbulence is simply the irregular movement of air. Just as a car moves over bumps on an uneven road, an aeroplane may shake, rise or dip slightly when it passes through changing air currents. Why does this happen? The atmosphere is constantly moving. Warm air rises, cool air sinks, winds change speed and direction, and strong jet streams flow high above the Earth. Mountains and thunderstorms can also disturb the surrounding air. Sometimes turbulence even occurs in a perfectly clear sky—this is called clear-air turbulence. But why does it feel so alarming? Because the movement is sudden and unpredictable. Your inner ear senses that the plane is moving, while your eyes—inside the cabin—cannot see what is causing it. This confuses the brain and activates its alarm system. As a result, even a small change in altitude can feel like a dramatic fall. The reassuring fact is that modern aircraft are designed and extensively tested to withstand forces far greater than those experienced during ordinary turbulence. Their wings are supposed to flex—it helps them absorb the movement safely. Pilots are also trained to manage turbulence and use weather forecasts, radar and reports from other aircraft to avoid the roughest areas whenever possible. The main risk during turbulence is not usually to the aeroplane, but to passengers who are not wearing seat belts. So keep your seat belt fastened whenever you are seated, take a slow breath and remember: the aircraft is built to handle this. Turbulence is simply a few potholes on the highway of the sky—and your aeroplane has excellent suspension!
