On December 20th, 1989, the U.S. invaded Panama to remove Manuel Noriega — and then told the world it was a liberation. Operation Just Cause launched at 1am. Twenty-three U.S. soldiers were killed — their names carved into monuments. The official American count put Panamanian civilian dead at 201. An independent Physicians for Human Rights investigation, sent in six weeks later, found the real number was closer to 300 civilians — and only 50 Panamanian military deaths, not the 314 the U.S. claimed. Flip the official ratio and the truth flips with it: roughly 85 percent of all Panamanian lives lost in the invasion were civilians. Bodies exceeded morgue capacity within days. Some were buried in a common grave at the U.S.-controlled Corozal cemetery, later exhumed and reburied elsewhere in the city. The American press celebrated the fall of Noriega.
