At 3:17 a.m., Room 306’s call bell started ringing. It had been empty since Mr Hargreaves died two nights earlier. I entered to reset it. His bed was made, his chair empty, but his silver watch was back on the bedside table. When I picked it up, the bell stopped. The intercom whispered, “Nurse... don’t let him in.” A maintenance worker I’d never seen before was watching me from the corridor. He ran. Security caught him with stolen keys and medication. Before sunrise, the watch vanished. Maybe Mr Hargreaves was returning the favour.
