Scientists surveying the Amazon rainforest say one relatively small region may contain approximately forty thousand different insect species. Many could be completely unknown to science. Researchers are conducting one of the largest insect surveys ever attempted in the Amazon. Teams are collecting samples from the soil, tree trunks, leaves, rivers, and the highest sections of the forest canopy. The challenge is enormous. Insects make up much of the rainforest’s biodiversity, but many species are extremely small, difficult to identify, or active only during certain seasons. Researchers will use microscopes, DNA testing, and massive reference databases to separate known insects from possible new discoveries. The project could reveal species that pollinate plants, recycle nutrients, control pests, or possess chemicals with potential medical and technological uses. But scientists are also racing against habitat destruction and rising temperatures. Some insects could disappear before researchers have an opportunity to identify, name, or understand them. One small section of rainforest may contain more species than scientists can document in years. And somewhere inside it could be a creature humanity has never seen before.
