There is something in your home right now that you have been living with for so long you no longer notice it. But the spiritual world notices. And every single day it is using what you have normalized to gain access to a space that was supposed to be a sanctuary. Joshua 24:15 says as for me and my household we will serve the Lord. That verse is printed on walls and carved into wooden signs in Christian homes around the world. But here is the question very few people are willing to ask — does what happens inside your home actually match what hangs on your wall? Because the enemy does not need your invitation to enter. He only needs your habit. And the most dangerous habits are the ones that look so ordinary you would never think to question them. Habit one is allowing entertainment that mocks God into your home. This habit has become so normalized that challenging it makes people uncomfortable. Movies with graphic sexual content, shows that mock Christianity, music that glorifies everything God stands against. Most Christians consume it all while telling themselves it is just entertainment and it does not affect them. But Psalm 101:3 says I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. What enters your eyes enters your home and what enters your home enters your family. If something on your screen regularly mocks God or normalizes what scripture calls abominable it does not belong in a home that has declared itself for the Lord. You cannot expect God's presence in a room where you consistently invite his name to be mocked. Habit two is arguing constantly without resolution. Every couple argues and every family has conflict. That is not what this is about. This is about the pattern of constant unresolved conflict that never reaches peace. The same fight every week, the same words thrown, the same wounds reopened. Ephesians 4:26 makes a direct connection most people miss — do not let the sun go down while you are still angry and do not give the devil a foothold. A foothold means a place to stand, a base of operation. When anger is never resolved in your home the enemy does not need to break in. You have given him a permanent address inside your own walls. Habit three is neglecting prayer as a family. A prayerless home is an unguarded home and an unguarded home is an open invitation. Prayer rarely disappears with a dramatic decision. It disappears gradually as life gets busy and evenings get crowded with screens. And what replaces it is subtle — more irritability, more anxiety, more disconnection. Matthew 18:20 says where two or three gather in my name there am I with them. The inverse of that promise is sobering. Where prayer disappears from the household the guarantee of his manifest presence disappears with it. And where God's presence withdraws a vacancy sign goes up and the enemy does not need a second invitation. Habit four is keeping objects with spiritual darkness in your home. Tarot cards kept in a drawer from a curiosity phase. A Ouija board from a teenage sleepover still sitting in a closet. Statues purchased from temples of other religions. Books about witchcraft or new age spirituality sitting on a bookshelf. Deuteronomy 7:26 says do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you like it will be set apart for destruction. God is not being dramatic. He is being protective. Some objects carry spiritual weight that your natural eyes cannot detect but your home's atmosphere can. Go room by room, open every drawer, check every shelf, and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what does not belong. Habit five is allowing gossip and slander to fill your home. Your home absorbs what is consistently spoken inside it and the words you allow become the atmosphere your family breathes. When conversation in your home is constantly about other people's failures, mistakes, and secrets you are filling your home with spiritual pollution. Children in those homes learn that people are entertainment and that vulnerability is dangerous. Proverbs 6:16-19 lists seven things God hates and among them is a person who stirs up conflict in the community. Replace gossip with prayer. The next time someone's name comes up negatively at your dinner table stop and pray for them instead. Watch what that single shift does to the atmosphere of your home. Habit six is neglecting spiritual authority as the head of the home. This is the most important habit on this list because every other habit we have discussed — the entertainment, the arguments, the prayerlessness, the objects, the gossip, the financial dishonesty — they all exist in the absence of something that was supposed to be present. Spiritual leadership. Many people love their families deeply but have completely abandoned their spiritual responsibility in the home. They have never led a family prayer, never opened the Bible at the dinner table, never walked through their home and declared the peace of God over every room. Ephesians 6:11 commands us to put on the full armor of God so we can take our stand against the devil's schemes. That armor is not just for church. It is for your living room, your bedroom, and your children's room. Your home is not just a building. It is spiritual territory. And every day through habits you may never have questioned you are either establishing God's presence in that territory or creating space for the enemy to operate. Start today. Walk through your home with new eyes. Examine your habits. Clean what needs cleaning. Remove what needs removing. And reclaim every room every corner and every conversation for the glory of God.
