she was not my mother

This is a true story. The Thing That Looked Like My Mother This happened when I was 27 years old, and to this day, I've never been able to explain what happened that night. It was around 3:00 a.m. I woke up with a strange feeling. The kind of feeling that tells you someone is standing in your room. Someone was beside my bed. Still half asleep, I assumed it was my mother trying to wake me up. I didn't want to get out of bed. Without opening my eyes, I pulled the blanket over my head and mumbled, "Leave me alone." A second later... I felt someone grab the blanket. They pulled it. Once. Then again. Twice. A third time. By the third tug, something felt horribly wrong. A cold realization hit me. Every single night before I go to sleep, I lock my bedroom door from the inside. I always have. No one could have gotten into my room. My heart started pounding. Slowly... Very slowly... I lowered the blanket just enough to see who was standing there. At first glance... It looked exactly like my mother. She was wearing my mother's clothes. She had my mother's body. The same height. The same posture. But then... I looked at her face. And my blood ran cold. It wasn't my mother. Her skin was completely pitch black. Not dark... Black. Like a shadow with human features. Long, tangled white hair hung around her face. Her eyes never blinked. She didn't smile. She didn't speak. She simply stood there... Staring directly at me. As if she wanted me to wake up. As if she'd been waiting for me to look at her. Every instinct told me not to move. Not to scream. Not to acknowledge whatever it was. So I slowly pulled the blanket back over my head... Closed my eyes... And pretended to be asleep. I don't know how long it stayed there. Minutes... Maybe hours. At some point... Exhaustion overcame my fear. And I drifted off. When I woke up the next morning, sunlight filled my room. For a moment, I convinced myself it had all been a nightmare. Then I remembered. The blanket. The pulling. The face. I walked to my bedroom door. It was still locked from the inside. Exactly the way I had left it before going to bed. No one had entered. No one could have entered. I never saw that thing again. But sometimes... When I wake up in the middle of the night... I still get the feeling... That someone is standing beside my bed... Waiting for me to look.
