You wake before sunrise to the sound of someone pounding on the wooden door. For a moment, you think it is another ordinary morning. Your mother is preparing breakfast. Your younger brother is still asleep. Outside, the narrow streets of your village are quiet beneath the pale morning sky. Then your father opens the door. Two military officers are standing outside. One of them holds a paper with your name written across the top. You have been ordered to report for duty. The war that once seemed far away has finally reached your home. You are only nineteen years old. Until today, your life has been simple. You helped your family, worked in the fields, and imagined that one day you might leave the village to study in a large city. You knew almost nothing about military strategy, weapons, or survival. But none of that matters now. Your mother quietly packs rice, dried vegetables, and an extra shirt into a small cloth bag. Your father does not say much. He places one hand on your shoulder and tells you to remember who you are, no matter what happens. By midday, you are walking toward the train station with dozens of other young men. Some try to appear brave. Some make nervous jokes. Others stare silently through the train windows as their homes disappear behind them. The journey takes you farther than you have ever traveled before. When the train finally stops, uniformed officers order everyone outside. You arrive at a crowded military training camp filled with tents, marching soldiers, supply trucks, and anxious new recruits. A commander stands before your group. He tells you that the training will be difficult, the days will be long, and everyone must learn quickly. The country is depending on you. You look around at the strangers standing beside you. They are no longer farmers, students, shop workers, or sons. From this moment forward, you are soldiers. And before the sun rises again, your new life will begin.
