In 1846, eighty-seven pioneers travelling to California made one catastrophic decision. They followed an untested shortcut through the American wilderness. The route was longer and more dangerous than promised, costing them precious supplies and delaying their journey by weeks. When they finally reached the Sierra Nevada mountains, an early snowstorm trapped them beneath several feet of snow. Food disappeared. The livestock died. Some reportedly ate leather, bones—and eventually the bodies of those who had already died. Rescue parties fought through the mountains, but help took months to arrive. Of the eighty-seven people who began the journey, only forty-eight survived. The tragedy became known as the Donner Party—one of the darkest stories in American history. Was cannibalism their only chance of survival… or would you rather have died? Comment what you would have done, and follow for more dark history case files.
