Could crocodiles really be living in our sewers? For decades, people have reported seeing large reptilian shapes moving beneath major cities. The legend claims that unwanted baby alligators and crocodiles were flushed down toilets—only to survive and grow inside the warm sewer system. Most experts dismiss the idea of permanent breeding colonies. Sewers offer darkness and water, but very little suitable food, sunlight or warmth for a large reptile to survive long-term. Yet individual animals have occasionally been discovered inside drains, tunnels and sewage systems after escaping captivity. Now imagine one surviving beneath a crowded city. It would learn to follow rats through the tunnels. Workers entering underground chambers could disappear without witnesses. And every unexplained movement beneath a drain cover would suddenly mean something much worse. An entire colony is probably an urban legend.
