Cascading down a steep mountainside in southwestern Türkiye sits a surreal landscape that looks like a frozen, snow-covered palace made of blinding white ice. But this isn’t snow or ice, it’s Pamukkale, known for millennia as the "Cotton Castle". This geological wonder was forged over thousands of years by thermal hot springs rich in calcium carbonate. As superheated mineral water trickled down the cliffside, it cooled and deposited thick layers of petrified limestone, forming hundreds of brilliant white travertine terraces filled with glowing, sky-blue thermal pools. The ancient world was so entranced by these therapeutic waters that Romans built the grand spa city of Hierapolis right at the top of the cliff in the second century BC. Emperors and noblemen travelled across the Mediterranean to bathe in these hot springs, believing they cured ailments. Today, visitors can swim in Cleopatra’s Pool, floating over fallen, two-thousand-year-old Roman marble columns submerged in the thermal water. Though centuries of earthquakes destroyed much of Hierapolis, Pamukkale’s mineral waters continue to flow and reshape the cliff. Standing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site where natural geology and ancient history collide, this glowing white fortress remains one of the most breath-taking wonders on Earth. Thanks for watching!
