Your people tried to make their own country in these mountains. Seventeen eighty-four. East Tennessee. North Carolina sat on the other side of the ridges and acted like nobody lived out here. So the Overmountain settlers said fine. We’ll govern ourselves. They named it Franklin. After Benjamin. They wanted it to be the fourteenth state. They picked a governor. John Sevier. They made laws. They held court in Jonesborough and Greeneville. They even fought the Cherokee and each other. Congress said no. North Carolina said you’re still ours. Then neighbors started shooting. The Battle of Franklin was settlers against settlers over taxes and pride. Four years. That’s all it lasted. Then the lost state got swallowed into Tennessee, and the schoolbooks forgot it. But that streak didn’t die. If the courthouse is too far and the government don’t see you, you make your own rules. That’s Franklin. That’s still these mountains. Follow for the history they buried.
