There's a girl who waves at school buses. Same stretch of road every time. Just past the trees. She stands there in a yellow raincoat and she waves at the kids in the windows. The rule is simple. Don't wave back. Everyone at that school knows it. Nobody knows who started it. A kid named Theo waved back on a Tuesday. His friends laughed. Nothing happened. That night he woke up at 3 a.m. because someone was waving at him from the end of his bed. He told his mom. She checked. Empty room. The next night, she was closer. Standing beside him. The night after that, he could feel the raincoat touching his arm. Theo stopped sleeping. His friends said he kept holding his hand up, curled, like he was stuck halfway through a wave. They found him a week later at the same stretch of road. Just past the trees. Standing in the rain. Waving at the bus.
