THE WOMAN WHO COUNTS In a small village, parents tell their children one rule: If you hear a woman counting outside your window at night… never let her reach ten. Nobody remembers her real name. They call her The Counting Woman. The legend says she lost nine children during a winter famine. On the tenth night, villagers heard her walking from house to house, whispering numbers beneath children’s windows. “One…” “Two…” “Three…” By sunrise, ten children were missing. They never found them. Centuries later, people still hear her. One night, a boy named Mateo woke to a woman whispering outside. “Seven…” He pulled the blanket over his head. “Eight…” His mother ran into the room and covered his ears. “Don’t listen.” “Why?” Then came— “Nine…” His mother began crying. Mateo whispered, “What happens at ten?” She stared toward the window. “She comes inside.” Silence. A minute passed. Nothing. Mateo smiled. “She stopped.” His mother didn’t. Because she knew the part of the legend nobody tells children. If she stops at nine… it’s because the tenth child is already inside the house. From beneath Mateo’s bed came a woman’s voice. “One.”
