This fish has almost completely colourless blood. And somehow… it’s alive. This is the Antarctic icefish. Unlike almost every other vertebrate on Earth, its blood lacks functional haemoglobin — the protein that normally makes blood red and carries oxygen. So how does it survive? The freezing Antarctic Ocean contains lots of dissolved oxygen, and the icefish has adaptations that help move enough of it around its body. Meaning underneath Antarctic ice… there’s a fish swimming around with blood that barely looks like blood at all.
