My First Relationship Nearly Got Me Choked!

I have quite a few crazy ex stories, but this one happened right at the beginning of what I guess you could call my chasing-girls phase. For this story, I’ll call her Heidi. I was fourteen and painfully shy around girls. I could talk to my friends all day, but put me next to a girl I thought was attractive and suddenly I had no idea what to say. That year I got moved into a new class, and by complete luck the teacher sat me next to this really cute blonde girl. I remember thinking I’d hit the jackpot before I’d even spoken to her. Thankfully, she made it easy. We started talking during class, then joking around and flirting whenever the teacher wasn’t paying attention. Before long we were talking outside of school too, and eventually we started seeing each other. For fourteen-year-old me, this was incredible. I’d gone from barely knowing how to speak to girls to somehow having a girlfriend without really understanding how I’d pulled it off. Pretty quickly, though, Heidi started doing things I didn’t know how to respond to. She would call my house constantly, and sometimes I’d answer only for her to immediately start telling me she was naked. Even at school she’d make sexual comments or advances toward me, and I know most fourteen-year-old boys probably would’ve considered this the greatest thing in the world, but I was painfully shy and had absolutely no experience with girls. Most of the time I just froze or awkwardly changed the subject. At first she seemed to find that funny, but after a while I started wondering if it actually bothered her because that was around the time her behavior toward me began changing. One day in class she suddenly dug her fingernails into the back of my hand hard enough to make me bleed. I remember pulling my hand away and asking why she’d done it, and part of me genuinely wondered if she was angry because I hadn’t been responding to all the sexual stuff the way she wanted me to. She just laughed and told me she was joking. She’d grown up around brothers and described herself as a bit of a tomboy, so according to her, she was just used to playing rough. I believed her. Or at least I wanted to. But it kept happening. She’d claw at my hands during class, sometimes hard enough to leave scratches, and she’d go from being incredibly sweet with me one minute to insulting me the next. At some point I also found out she’d been hurting herself. Looking back, there were obviously signs that something more serious was going on, but I was fourteen. This was basically my first experience with a girl, and I had no idea what a normal relationship was supposed to look like. For a while I genuinely wondered if I was the problem, like maybe I was rejecting her without realizing it or just didn’t understand girls. Eventually, though, even fourteen-year-old me knew I’d had enough. I started distancing myself from her, and one day I decided to sit next to somebody else in class. There wasn’t some dramatic breakup conversation. I just stopped giving her the same attention, and as far as I was concerned, whatever we’d been doing was over. A few days later, I was sitting at my desk when everything suddenly went black. Something had been thrown over my head. Before I could even understand what was happening, I felt something tighten around my neck. It was one of the curtains from the classroom. Heidi had come up behind me, thrown it over my head and started strangling me with it in front of the entire class. I remember grabbing at the fabric and trying to get it away from my neck, but because I couldn’t see anything, I didn’t even know where she was standing. People started yelling around us, and eventually somebody managed to pull her off me. The whole thing probably lasted seconds, but I remember sitting there afterward trying to process the fact that the same cute girl I’d been nervous to talk to a few weeks earlier had just tried to choke me in front of everyone. Obviously, she got into serious trouble. My parents were furious when they found out and complained to the school, and eventually Heidi was moved out of my class. I remember being relieved because I figured that would finally be the end of it. It wasn’t. She still had my home phone number and would occasionally call the house, but whenever I answered, she’d just hang up. This was before everyone our age had smartphones, so there wasn’t much I could do besides recognize the pattern and eventually stop caring about it. After a while the calls stopped, and I stopped hearing from her. A few months had passed , when one day one of my mates showed up at my house with a girl he’d recently started seeing. I opened the door and there was Heidi. Neither of them had apparently realized the connection beforehand, and I remember staring at her for a second while everything from that classroom came rushing back. Then I shut the door in their face. I could hear Matt calling me an asshole as they turned to leave. Heidi remained quiet the entire time. I eventually told my friend everything that had happened between us, he said he believed me but strangely enough, after that day we pretty much lost touch. I never knew exactly why. Part of me always suspected Heidi got in his head and convinced him to stop talking to me, but I have no way of knowing if that’s actually what happened. Looking back, I realize how completely out of my depth I was. I was fourteen years old, experiencing one of my first relationships, and because I didn’t know what normal was supposed to look like, I kept explaining away behavior that scared me. I thought I was just bad at understanding girls. It’s been years since I’ve heard from my friend. I hope he’s okay.
