The Balloon Release That Went Terribly Wrong This might be one of the worst ideas a city ever had. Release 1.5 million balloons into the sky… all at once. In 1986, Cleveland wanted to break a world record. Thousands of volunteers filled balloons for hours, until a massive net in the city center was packed with them. Then they released it. And at first… it looked incredible. More than a million balloons filled the sky above Cleveland. But then the weather changed. Instead of disappearing into the distance, the balloons were pushed back toward the ground. They covered streets. They landed on the airport. And thousands fell into Lake Erie. That’s when things became serious. Two fishermen had been reported missing on the lake. Rescue crews were searching for them… but the water was now covered with balloons, making it harder to spot anything floating on the surface. The two men were later found dead. What was supposed to be a spectacular world record had turned into a massive cleanup… and a lasting example of how badly a publicity stunt can go wrong. All because someone thought releasing 1.5 million balloons at once… was a good idea.
