Imagine waking up tomorrow…and suddenly EVERYONE has to drive on the opposite side of the road. Sounds like complete chaos, right? Well, on September 3rd, 1967, Sweden actually did it! Good morning! Today is Thursday, September 3rd, 2026. And before we jump into history, here’s today’s thought: “History is not only about where we’ve been. It’s about the moments when people decided to change direction.” And September 3rd certainly gave us a few of those moments. Let’s go back to 1783. After eight long years of revolution, representatives of the United States and Great Britain signed the Treaty of Paris. Britain formally recognized the independence of the United States, and the American Revolutionary War officially came to an end. A nation that had declared its independence in 1776 finally had that independence recognized by its former ruler. Then, on September 3rd, 1838, another extraordinary journey toward freedom began. Twenty-year-old Frederick Douglass escaped slavery in Maryland. Disguised as a sailor and carrying borrowed identification, Douglass traveled north by train and steamboat. Less than 24 hours later, he reached New York. He would eventually become one of America's most powerful abolitionist voices—a writer, speaker and leader whose words helped change the country. Now jump forward exactly 101 years. September 3rd, 1939. Two days earlier, Nazi Germany had invaded Poland. Britain issued an ultimatum demanding Germany withdraw. It didn't. At 11:00 that morning, Britain declared war on Germany. France followed later that day. Europe was entering World War II—a conflict that would eventually spread across the globe and change the lives of hundreds of millions of people. But now…back to that crazy traffic story. September 3rd, 1967. Sweden had been driving on the LEFT side of the road. The government decided the country needed to switch to the RIGHT. So they prepared for years. Road signs were changed. Intersections were redesigned. Public transportation had to be modified. Then came the moment. Traffic stopped. Drivers carefully moved across the road. And at 5:00 in the morning… Sweden started driving on the other side. An entire country's traffic system changed direction almost overnight. And finally, September 3rd, 1976. NASA's Viking 2 spacecraft successfully landed on Mars. From American independence…to Frederick Douglass escaping toward freedom…to a world entering war…to an entire nation changing direction…and humanity reaching another planet.
