Her name was Ching Shih, and she controlled over 1,800 ships and 80,000 pirates. In the early 1800s, off the coast of China, a former prostitute rose to command the largest pirate fleet the world had ever seen. She built a brutal code of law. Steal from the fleet, and you lost your head. Betray her, and your entire family paid the price. Under her rule, the South China Sea became a graveyard for merchant ships and naval fleets alike. Empires took notice. China sent its navy. Portugal sent warships. Even Britain, ruler of the seas, tried to crush her. They all failed. Fleet after fleet was destroyed, humiliated by a woman commanding pirates the world underestimated. Eventually, the Qing government did something almost unthinkable. They offered her amnesty instead of a war they could not win. Ching Shih accepted, kept her fortune, and walked away untouched. She died peacefully in her sixties, the only pirate in history who defeated empires and was never defeated herself.
