this American bomber broke apart in midair and dropped two nuclear bombs on North Carolina but one of those bombs came terrifyingly close to detonating it was January 24th 1961 and a B-52 carrying two nuclear weapons was flying over Goldsboro then the aircraft suffered a catastrophic failure and broke apart the bombs fell toward the ground one weapon landed relatively intact but the other was something far more frightening when investigators examined what happened during the fall they discovered that the bomb's safety mechanisms had been triggered five of its six safety switches had been actuated only one mechanism prevented the weapon from detonating think about that a nuclear bomb had fallen from a destroyed aircraft five safety mechanisms had already been triggered and one final safeguard was standing between the weapon and disaster the bomb was eventually recovered but parts of it were left buried because the weapon was too damaged to fully retrieve the incident became one of America's most famous nuclear close calls and it exposed a terrifying reality of the Cold War America wasn't just preparing for nuclear war it was flying nuclear weapons through the sky and sometimes the difference between an accident and a catastrophe was just one safety mechanism
