There are times in potty training when you have to throw in the towel. I call it a reset. A do-over. It’s okay. Sometimes it happens THOUGH I will say, I have some pretty specific rules about how to be most effective about this. There are many reasons you might need to do this. Sometimes life gets in the way, sometimes our expectations are off. Sometimes something unforeseen happens. Whenever I have to suggest a reset to parents, they usually panic. “But I put in all this work! It was for nothing?” They are often very resistant because yes, they have put in all that work. But listen: everything you’ve taught will marinate. The next go around will be so much easier. But if you’re in tears and your little one is going nowhere fast...it might be time for a breather. You can’t be an effective teacher if you’re all muddled up. Please listen to ep 32 (The Reset) of The Oh Crap Potty Training podcast for all the details on how to reset effectively. Not every situation is appropriate for a reset. pee and poop withholding are good examples of when not to reset. These should be worked through with help as they typically get worse with time. Let's talk about snowplow parenting. You're probably familiar with the term helicopter parenting; where a parent overly hovers over the child. Snowplow parenting is clearing all obstacles and discomfort out of the child's way. ㅤ And I get it. We all want our children to be happy. And if you struggled in your own childhood, you want your child to not have those struggles. ㅤ However, humans HAVE to go through struggles and discomfort, including unhappiness. And getting through those is what builds emotional fortitude, grit, and resilience. If we continually shield kids from these, they will grow up thinking they can't handle anything. ㅤ There's a direct correlation to this way of parenting and the skyrocketing depression and anxiety in our youth. We want them to feel capable and strong and that they can withstand struggles. ㅤ This is tricky as they're growing through the toddler years and it's a parenting practice for sure. One of the best pieces of advice that I've heard. Don't let kids do things that make you not like them. I know how easy it can be to let certain things slide. I know we're all super busy and stressed and often overwhelmed. So we let things slide. ㅤ But just like with our partners, our friends, and our family...when we let things slide, we start to build resentment. And this will eventually end in us losing our shit. So we really want to nip certain things in the bud before they become entrenched habits and we build resentment towards our little ones. ㅤ We'll explore how this pertains to potty training in ep 71 of The Oh Crap Potty Training podcast. Here’s the deal about power struggles: you’ll never, EVER win against your little one. They’re small but made of steel. The key? Let go of your end of the rope. It takes creativity and regulation on YOUR part. Step one: always validate their feelings. Don’t give in, just acknowledge. Take potty training, for example. You know they need to go but they are resisting. Instead of digging in, offer choices. “OK, you don’t have to pee right now. Let’s set a timer for when you want to try. Would you like to set it for two and a half minutes, or five minutes?” 9 times out of 10, they’ll pick the half. Louder for the people in the back! When we have a firm and loving boundary...that's AWESOME. But we can't expect our kids to be chill with it. Their job...their actual developmental job...is to kick against your boundary. You know why? Before heading back to daycare after a break for potty training, be sure to ask how much grace the teachers will give your child. I think it's fair to ask for a good week, if not more. Many kids will accidents on the first or second day back but then get the hang of things there.
