This is a question I hear now and then. How am I supposed to be regulated when there is so much scary stuff going on in the world? Firstly, working on regulation doesn’t mean you’re never dysregulated or anxious, it means we have the tools to return to baseline when we can. It also means we function in a regulated state on a basic, normal day. This allows us to get out of the cycle of waking up and being overwhelmed by daily life - work, laundry, making dinner. 2. But big world events will effect us! Of course. We’re not robots. And we can also get stuck in this. It’s really typical for the nervous system and subconscious get stuck in constant fight or flight because it feels like this is helping. Surely having moments of regulation and presence at a time like this is dangerous! And morality comes into it too. If people are suffering and I have a moment of peace, I must be a bad person. Please remember, if we’re all in fight or flight who’s going to show up and make change? We’ll all be in flee and freeze mode, exhausted and overwhelmed - doing nothing. This is a big one so I get if this comes with a bit of resistance. Giving more tasks and homework to someone already in overwhelm is not going to help or last.
