I’ve had experiences with very famous people. Experiences that have been terrible and others that have been great. Last week I spent a day with the BIGGEST celebrity of them all - a boy bander, @ajmcleanofficial, and he couldn’t have been nicer or more insightful. I feel like I have no control over my social media presence, especially with the TikTok hearings and the ever-changing algorithms. It’s like I’m a sitting duck who is posting content I really believe in, but it could be pulled away at any minute, without any notice. Social media has been a part of our lives for more than a decade now and the thought of it being taken away seems inconceivable, but as we know, nothing is for sure in the technology space. Let this high-anxiety time be a reminder on why brands cannot rely on social media alone. I know I sound like a broken record but if there was ever a time to diversify, folks…it’s now! Traditional media is still out there, it’s still viable and although it’s changing it will never go away. Your 11pm nightly newscast may look different now than 20 years ago, but it will always need interesting newsmakers, new perspectives and stories to tell. Here’s a thought nugget: Think about the celebrities that MIGHT post a social media a few times a year, but still have thriving careers. That’s because of PR and traditional media! To clarify, I’m not saying give up hope on social media – I pray the tech Gods give us algorithm stability at some point – but don’t give up on traditional media. It’s the most credible form of media, and with a little hard work, it gets your message out in a massive way which you can then amplify. Who knows, it may reach a new audience that has given up on the algorithm long ago!
