When parents and children are raised in different cultures, they often have very different relationships with mental health—a generational gap that can make communication and understanding difficult. In this episode, host Vic Armstrong speaks with three members of UCA WAVES Youth Mental Health Collaborative, an organization dedicated to bridging these divides in AAPI communities. 248 people walked at the Atlanta Out of the Darkness Community Walk and raised $57,000, when Chris first joined AFSP as the Vice President of the Southern Division. Chris reflects on the progress Community Walks have made since. In 2022, 5,000 people walked in Atlanta raising over half a million dollars making them third in the nation. "People across the country are realizing more and more that these efforts are important, and are stepping up to support us." Chris and the volunteers continue to walk, raise crucial funds, build a supportive community, and fight to #StopSuicide. "At the Walks, our dedicated, hardworking volunteers are always at the ready with a smile, a hug, a tissue. The sense of shared purpose makes our Walks healing and hopeful events, at which lifelong connections and friendships often start." Read Chris' story at the link in our bio. #HopeWalksHere
On May 30, 2017, Taylor lost her mother, Sabrina Jones, to suicide. After losing her mom, Taylor was on a journey of making sense of what life would look like without her. Sabrina was successful, motivated, and kind, but struggled with many mental health challenges. Taylor didn’t fully understand how mental health could affect someone’s everyday life, including her own, and she felt lost trying to understand her mom’s sadness. The days after the holidays can be especially hard for those grieving a loss. For Taylor, finding support and hope came when she participated in her first #OutOfTheDarkness Walk in Omaha, Nebraska, in memory of her mom. There, she connected with a community affected by mental health and suicide. This helped Taylor realize she wasn’t alone and began her path toward healing. Taylor’s story reminds us that during this season of celebration and reflection, there’s space for both grief and hope, and that the strength of community can help carry us through to healing and new beginnings. If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ll notice more and more mental health professionals sharing advice. And while much of it is helpful, it raises an important question: where’s the line between content and care? 💭📱 On the latest episode of Strong Talk, AFSP's VP for Health Equity and Engagement, Victor Armstrong, MSW, sits down with Shani Tran, founder of @theshaniproject, a licensed professional clinical counselor, author, and content creator, to explore this phenomenon. In their conversation, Shani shares how she started posting on social media, the significant boundaries between her real and online self, and why none of the mental health content on social media counts as therapy.
