In 2016, I understood the assignment. I became the first Black student accepted into — and in 2019 to graduate from — a 3-year optometry program. I knew finishing would make history. I knew it would matter. I knew it wasn’t just about me. Every year during Black History Month, I post about this moment because I never want to forget the weight of it — & how God carried me through! I knew what I was stepping into, and I trusted that if I did my part, God would do the rest. Now, 10 years later, I’m still honoring that calling — showing up, taking up space, and making room for more. 2025 was not playing with me 😭 Like at all. This was the year I learned that growth doesn’t always come with a glow-up… sometimes it comes with pajamas, tears, and a whole lot of self-reflection. I learned that rest is not laziness. That motherhood will humble you in ways no career ever could. That marriage requires grace, humor, and occasionally pretending you didn’t hear each other 😅 And that being “productive” looks very different when you’re protecting your peace. Some days I felt like I was thriving. Other days I was just trying to make it to bedtime. But somehow… both can be true. 2025 taught me that I don’t have to explain my season to anyone. That slowing down is still progress. And that becoming her sometimes looks like letting go of who you used to be. So no, I didn’t “do it all.” But I did what mattered.
